In college athletics, billions of dollars of revenue are being brought in annually and the debate over whether or not to pay collegiate athletes is gaining momentum. College athletes do not receive any compensation other than their scholarship for any merchandise sold or their likenesses used by companies for money. The NCAA has made it very clear that college athletes will not receive compensation whatsoever for their play on the field or merchandise sold with their likeness on them. Many people argue that a portion of the billions of dollars that the National Collegiate Athletics Association or the NCAA for short bring in as revenue should be distributed among collegiate athletes for their hard work in their respective sport. This argument has been going on for some time now and recently it has gotten even more heated. Players have been in the process of starting a union and their fight against the NCAA has just begun. The issue of paying college athletes has been and will continue to be a very polarizing issue. The issue of paying college athletes has only two sides to it - either you are for paying athletes or you believe that their scholarship is payment enough. I believe that college athletes should be paid for companies including the NCAA using their likenesses to make money. College athletics are a large part of American culture and bring in large amounts of revenue. Many Americans spend hundreds and some even thousands of dollars each year to watch their favorite schools and players. These athletes in college sports are the major contributors to the millions of dollars being brought into their respective schools. Johnny Manziel for example, was a very polarizing figure in college and made his college, Texas A&M, millions of dollars. The NCAA needs to come to the realization that most athletes do not even have pocket money to be able to buy food most of the time. The NCAA has stopped the notion of any money from being put into the pockets of college athletes. Several student-athletes have illegitimately been paid by their schools, and have received punishment by the NCAA. There are more than likely many cases of payments to student athletes that have never been discovered. These punishments need to be reformed, and college athletes need to start being compensated for participating in college athletics. Big changes in college athletics need to happen very soon for the good of the entire NCAA (Nocera 1-3). College athletes have dozens of restrictions that they must follow.
