Is the old man with enormous wings realistic? No. In this real world, we have never heard or seen anyone impeded by his enormous wings. We have heard of testimonies of those who claimed to have seen angels in synagogues or churches, in books or religious articles but I have never seen an angel. I have seen make-believed angels in movies and my kids in angel costumes but never a real angel. Furthermore, the old man in the story is bald and with a few faded hairs; he has lost most of his teeth and his wings are buzzard, proliferated with parasites, dirty and half-plucked. The description of the old man is far from angelic because we are told that angels are beautiful creatures. But if we read the Bible, it states in the book of Genesis that angels are an entirely different order of being than humans. The Bible nowhere states that angels are created in the image and likeness of God, as humans are (Genesis 1:26). Angels are spiritual beings that can, to a certain degree, take on physical form while humans are primarily physical beings, but with a spiritual aspect (http://www.gotquestions.org/angels-Bible.html). Having seen it that way (that angel can take any form), is there a possibility that the old man is an angel? Or specifically an angel of death as told by Pelayo and Elisienda’s wise neighbor? Here, we are tempted to say yes but we cannot find such realistic in this world. The magical aspects also include the miracles attributed to the angel where the blind man grows three new teeth and the paralytic who almost wins a lottery and the leper whose sores sprout sunflower. Are the characters in the story other than the ‘angel’ realistic? Yes. Pelayo was frightened when he first saw the old man which is a normal reaction if I would be in the same situation.
