Texting and driving in the past era has caused an increase in the mortality rate of drivers. They think that they can handle texting while driving and be safe, but studies and cases display that that’s not true. The government is imposing on enforcing laws and regulations for the safety of the people. Using electronic devices while operating a vehicle is increasing rapidly because of new technology, which is distracting people from the road. Texting while driving is extremely hazardous and poses a threat to not only the drivers but also to the individuals on the road. The National Safety Council says, “That there are about 1,600,000 accidents per year” (Edgin 1). The Harvard Center for Risk Analysis Study claims 330,000 injuries per year. Texting while driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than if you are intoxicated, and almost 25% of all accidents are caused by texting and driving. Around 800,000 drivers at any time are texting and driving across the country (Edgin par 3). An experiment was done at Oscoda-Wurtsmith Airport in Oscoda, Michigan that would only focus only on the driver’s reaction times to a light on the windshield at eye level, which is meant to simulate a lead car’s break light and cautious of the potential damage to man and machine all of the driving would be done in a straight line. The test subjects would have “qwerty” keypads and would be using phones similar to them. The test vehicle used was a Honda Pilot. When the red light on the windshield lit up, the driver had to hit the brakes. The one who was riding shotgun would have to use a hand-held switch to trigger the red light and monitor the driver’s results (“Texting while Driving” Austin par 3). First both of the driver’s reaction times were tested at 35 mph and 70 mpg to get the baseline readings.
