The theme of our record album is the pains of growing up. We designed the cover of the album in a manner that would convey the meaning behind our theme. The central image on the cover is a picture of Holden smoking a cigarette. Holden’s shape is filled in with images of collages, that represent tones in the novel. The top of Holden’s jacket is the image of brown rocks. The color brown represents sadness and loneliness, similar to what Holden feels in the novel. The color grey is a timeless and practical color that is often associated with loss or depression. These two colors are great representations of what Holden feels in the book. Holden experiences loss, loneliness and depression as he undergoes the pains of growing up. In the centre of Holden’s chest there is a picture of a flaming heart. His emotions towards people alternate drastically and he frantically tries to avoid abandonment and being alone. He also has suicidal thoughts and is impulsive with his excessive spending and smoking and his wandering aimlessly around the city. Holden experiences growing pains every day in his life. The main focus of the cover is a picture of Holden wearing his red hunting hat, which represents Holden’s loneliness and his desire to be seen differently from the rest of the world. Both sides of the cover are white to emphasize that fact that Holden is isolated from the world and that the color white is associated with innocence and purity.
