Background Wayne Gretzky was born on January 26, 1961 in Brantford Ontario and it seems that he was born to be a hockey player. Since he was 4 years old, Gretzky had been skating on a backyard rink that was built by his father, Walter Gretzky. There he practiced his speed, stick handling, and shooting for several hours a day. It was from there that, Wayne thought he was good enough to make the older team, but they turned him down because he was too young. So he went back to his yard and practiced some more until he was old enough. Which where his father said to him “The good Lord has blessed you with something special, obviously one was talent but more importantly the love for hockey that he’d never seen before”. His first year playing peewee, he only managed to score one goal the entire year. But throughout the years he improved my game and by the end of my last peewee season I scored 378 goals, and during the years after he earned the nickname “the white tornado” because he wore white gloves and was very fast. During Wayne’s early adolescence, he played for two professional teams in the OHL. Those teams were the Peterborough Petes and the Sue-Sault Marie Greyhounds. He finished that season second in the scoring race behind Bobby Smith. That was also the season when he chose the number 99, because 4th year player, Brian Gualazzi had already chosen his favorite number, 9. That same year, Wayne got to represent Canada in the 1978 World Junior Championship. In Wayne’s later adolescence, he joined the Indianapolis Racers. Being only 16 and the greatest hockey player ever he really wanted to join the NHL. But the entry age was 20, so he had to wait. After being sold to the Edmonton Oilers, Wayne Gretzky realized that the NHL was his place to be.
