School uniforms are no longer exclusive to private schools. A major point of discussion in public schools is school uniforms. Today, one in every five public schools requires uniforms (Should Schools...). Each year, more and more public schools are requiring students to wear school uniforms. Although some people believe this requirement is a bad policy, schools should require uniforms because it saves time and money, increases safety, and help students to focus more in school. Students that are required to wear uniforms save the student and family time and money. Wearing a uniform saves parents money and time by not having to go out and buy all the new fashions every year “because uniform styles remain consistent over the years” (Pike). Instead of spending hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, on different clothing for each season, parents would only have to buy 2 or 3 uniforms for a whole school year. Wearing uniforms also saves the child a lot of time. Many kids spend hours each week picking out their outfits for school, trying to make sure it looks acceptable. While a student that wears uniforms wastes little to no time planning what to wear each day. “The child might have to choose between khaki or navy blue pants, for example, but the options are much more limited than those of a student who has their entire closet to choose from” (McCormick). Uniforms give students limited options to choose from, making getting ready faster than someone that has to plan and coordinate an entire outfit. Having this limit of options of clothing to choose from, people feel that uniforms takes away students freedom to express themselves. Yes, school uniforms limits what they have to wear, but students can still express themselves by the way they style their hair or accessories they choose to wear.
