The topic of terrorism is not only a heated topic these days because of lots of terrorist activities going around the world but the topic itself has inspired a numerous amount of literatures in the past recent years as well. However, nowhere in all those highly diverse literatures or articles, has anyone been able to come up with a general theoretical analysis of the factors or conditions that causes the terrorism. But, generally speaking, as far as I am concerned, terrorist acts are motivated by political or social injustice, which the terrorist groups or organizations think have been done to them by those with whom they are fighting for. However, coming up with a general view of what might be the motivating factor behind such activities is not enough when you were to find out root causes of such acts. Moreover, when you are to find out the cause of terrorism, the first and foremost thing to do is to know what actually terrorism is. Hence, the main objective of this essay is to give readers an opinion regarding what basically terrorism is and to outline the possible approaches for the analysis of the causes of terrorism, which are based by comparing various terrorism cases in the past recent years. Generally speaking, terrorism simply means using the force, threat, violence or intimidation against a single person, group or country in order to achieve the aims of those organizations involved in such activities. There are various definitions of terrorism defined by numerous organizations involved in fighting against it. As per FBI, terrorism is “The unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives” [ CITATION FBInd l 1033 ]. However, this definition of terrorism, may not fit perfect when we are looking for what in real terrorism is as there are many different scenarios which causes terrorists organizations to conduct such acts. Hence, rather than providing the exact definition, the best possible way to approach the essay is to find out the related causes, drawing the conclusion based on those causes and then provide readers regarding my opinion about what terrorism actually is. Talking about what causes terrorism, [ CITATION Edw06 l 1033 ] In his article “exploring the root causes of terrorism”, suggests that the basic underlying causes of terrorism can be classified into permissive structural factors and direct underlying grievances. Here, he defines such structural factors as those that create an empowering environment which by on their own have no descriptive value but when combined with other factors, may have explanatory value. Such values include factors such as poverty, demographic factors: rapid population growth and its uneven shift across various ethnic groups [ CITATION Ros93 l 1033 ] and modernization/globalization to some extent. The other factor, underlying grievances symbolize the tangible political issues that then lead to terrorism [ CITATION Edw06 l 1033 ]. As far as the first structural factor poverty is concerned, it is often offered as one of the fundamental cause of terrorism. But being a structural factor, the accompanying variables in this case are the lack of resources, choices and respect. O’Nell argues that when poverty of resources come together with lack of choices, prospects and respect, they combine altogether and help the terrorism to thrive [ CITATION ONe02 l 1033 ]. Elaborating on this, it is certain that poverty give rise to hatred and resentment. Moreover, poor society means poor state which then results in weak governance, underdevelopment and even failed states. [ CITATION Edw06 l 1033 ] Suggests that these types of states not only lack the capacity to prevent terrorism or recruitment process to get control over such activities but lack of literacy level often give rise to fanaticism also. [ CITATION Mag03 l 1033 ] referred these states as “black holes” which were the result of combination of lack of proper governance, underdevelopment and lack of education level amongst the people residing in such states. For example, countries like Pakistan, Somalia, Algeria, Afghanistan, and Sudan are vulnerable to the local transnational terrorists groups in order to establish their base of operations and source of support. Moreover, as in the case of Southeast Asia, the sudden social and economic downfall has also been related with the pattern of extremism [ CITATION Rab03 l 1033 ]. Secondly, demographics factors have also seem to have contributed significantly as fa
