World War II was a remarkable event in history that begun in early September 1939. During the pacific theatre, Australia went to war with it's allying country Britain but the fall of Singapore caused Australia's new prime minister John Curtin to reconsider the country's international relationship with Britain. This resulted in the formation of Australia and America's alliance. This new alliance benefited both countries, new trends were introduced to Australians and due to the significant events of the war, new trade relationships formed, boosting Australia's economy. The formation of this new alliance also caused changes to be made in the cultural aspects of Australian life, shaping Australia to be the way it is today. Australia held a strong alliance with Britain, due to the fact that Australia was colonized by the British. In order for Australia to gain trust and obtain support and defence form Britain, they needed to prove their loyalty by supporting Britain in a war crisis. This meant in return Britain would provide defense if Australia faced any type of military threat. However this alliance changed when Japanese troops invaded Malaya, also a British colony and there defeated the Britain. Australian troops that were located in Malaya moved further south to a peninsula. By 31st Jan 1942, all of commonwealth troops including Australia were relocated to Singapore. At the time Singapore was the most important aspects in Britain's defence strategy. It had a large dockyard, but Britain had most of fleets back at home. The Singapore strategy meant Britain would have to send warships to Singapore in a crisis. When the Japanese attacked Singapore, there was only two British ships in dock, and they were both sunk by the Japanese aircrafts on 9th December. This caused the British to surrender and the troops, 15 000 of which were Australians, were taken as prisoners. The fall of Singapore caused Australia's newly elected prime minister John Curtin to reconsider Australia and Britian alliance. Due to the fact that Britain was no longer able to protect and defend itself or it's colonized nations, it was longer seen as a strong support. Curtin saw that US would be an appropriate ally joined forces against Japan. US declared war on Japan after the unexpected bombing of Pearl Harbor, killing a large number of US men.
