According to Merriam Webster dictionary feminism is defined as “the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities”. In Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Elizabeth Bennet is a character that is ahead of her time as an early feminist. Austen displays this aspect by displaying her intelligence, independence, and opinions on the equality within a marriage. Like a prisoner Elizabeth breaks out her cell and does what she wants as if there is no rules. In the beginning of the novel Mrs. Bennet is talking to her husband about marrying off her daughters, she says to her husband, “My dear Mr. Bennet,"..."how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them”(pg 2). Mrs. Bennet is so worried that her daughters won’t find a wealthy man that she is treating these marriages as business deals. Mrs. Bennet even treated her own marriage like a business deal which is something that Elizabeth learned from her mother. Then there is Mr. Collins who proposes to Elizabeth, she turns him down because she believes marriage “should be more than a business proposal but a matter that should involve love and personal feel
