Just a few seconds is just a blip of time, yet when you're behind a steering wheel and your eyes leave the road, that quick moment can change your life and the lives of countless others. One second is all it takes to be distracted. This one second decision doesn't seem like much right? Well let me give you some perspective, each day in the United States, more than 9 people are killed and more than 420,000 people are injured in crashes that are reported to involve a distracted driver(Snyder). An average of 3,328 men, women, children, and teens killed are annually(Snyder). Today we are faced with the task of reducing the number of distracted driving incidents. The government has set forth laws prohibiting distracted driving in an effort to reduce the number of distracted driving incidents, but that has proven to be ineffective. I believe that a Public Service Announcement (PSA) is not only the most helpful way of reducing the number of distracted driving incidents, but is also an effective way of inspiring change. Some people, however; argue that there is nothing that we can do to help reduce the number of distracted driving incidents because "It's something that just happens", "It's out of our control." Unfortunately these people contribute to the now forever empty spot at your family dinner table that was once filled by a loved one. What PSA's do best is convey the importance of an issue, work to change attitudes and misconceptions, and, most importantly, compel people to take action. A prime example of how a PSA is being used today is the National WildFire Prevention and their use of Smokey the bear. According to Ad-Council, " Smokey is the longest-running PSA campaign in U.S history." This campaign best characterizes the critical message of personal responsibility, which runs through all Ad-Council Campaigns. Due to the use of this PSA, the loss of forest land has dropped from 22 million acres in 1944 to under 8 million acres today. Just one public service announcement is all it took to get
