Everyday, we are expose to all sorts of new trends such as fashion, music, dance routines, and even ridiculous videos that go viral. These trends can last anywhere from a few days to multiple years from their initial appearance. One trend that has found its way to America is drug abuse. For many decades, marijuana, heroine and cocaine have permeated the streets of America’s major cities such as Los Angeles and Miami. In his essay “Should Drugs Be Legalized,” William Bennett expresses his opinion on the next step that America should not take to address this trend. He argues that the legalization of drugs will only augment the negative effects of drug abuse. William Bennett’s arguments in “Should Drugs Be Legalized” are strongly presented to the audience in a convincing manner. William Bennett increased the plausibility of his essay by adding remarks by significant figures. It is never easy to believe what someone says due to the fact that anyone can group together words in order to make a statement. However, showing evidence that other people, especially those who have accomplished great feats, support the statement proves the validity of the statement. One instance where William Bennett incorporated a famous icon into the essay “Should Drugs Be Legalized” was when he states, “The late Harvard Medical School psychiatry professor Norman Zinberg, a longtime proponent of “responsible” drug use, admitted that “use of now illicit drugs would certainly increase. Also, casualties probably would increase” (53). In this statement, Bennett brought up a respectable professor from the prestigious Harvard University in order to increase the legitimacy of his statement against the legalization of drugs. Professor Zinberg clearly states the effect of legalizing drugs is the increase of drug use and the casualties that follows these drugs. Harvard is one of the best, if not the best, university in the world and to have a statement from a professor from Harvard makes the essay much more credible.
