Chinese Americans have been fighting against the ridiculous American ordinances and laws that held back the Chinese Americans from ever being successful in America. The paper-son practice was only one of the many other actions taken by the Chinese American community to rebel against those ludicrous laws. Although there were many actions taken, not all of them were successful; the paper-son practice however, happened to be one of the more successful campaigns. With the timing of the paper-son practice being right after the 1906 earthquake, the timing could not have been any better. There was no proof of real natural born citizens, so it was only natural to take advantage of the situation and bring back their families that they have been long separated from due to countless restrictions. The paper-son practice, although “illegal” only in the eyes of the conservatives, was a perfectly timed and legitimate demonstration of the underprivileged Chinese Americans. Although the paper-son practice is considered illegal from a legal stand point, only the conservative right would be the ones to oppose and enforce stricter laws against Chinese immigration. The strict regulation on immigration did not only happen to the Chinese Americans back then, but is also happening now. For example, the debate of stricter regulation of the border is a huge issue with conservatives today. The argument of labor being taken away by “illegal aliens,” never being recognized as human beings, is similar to what Chinese immigrants faced when they came to America because of the conservative’s need for wanting to preserve the American ways of life. If there were no cheap labor, then the prices of products would shoot up, however Americans do not want to shell out more money for products either, making it impossible to keep wages high and prices of products low.
