In our society, there are many social problems, for example, social inequality, environmental degradation, malnutrition and starvation, lack and poor infrastructure, and disabled welfare. Among these many social problems, many people may think that it is the government’s role to deal with these social issues. But there is a group of people who do not ignore and wait for the government to fix these issues. They choose to take part in solving problems and innovating new things for the sake of the society. This group of people can be called social innovator or social entrepreneur. Thailand also has many social problems as well. One of them is malnutrition and starvation which is caused by the problem of food security. This problem affects people in many sectors of society. Fortunately, Thailand also has social innovators and social entrepreneurs. In the terms of food security, social entrepreneur plays a role in many different ways. In a way that is widespread and become a growing trend is organic food. This paper is going to show about social entrepreneur and organic food in Thailand by dividing into 4 parts. The first part I will give an overall of the food security problems. Starting with the characteristics of industrialized food system and then I will show you how industrialized food system affects the society. Then, in the second part, I will show the rise of social entrepreneur, and its definition. And in the next part I will talk about how local and organic food system can relieve the problems of food security. Lastly, I will move to the social entrepreneurs and organic food in Thailand. When talking about capitalism, most people tend to think of its liberty and freedom. Capitalism is the economic system that people have freedom to make decisions. People can choose their desired career. Similarly, in the food consumption, people have freedom to consume anything they want. When we go to supermarket, we will find that there are so many products to choose everywhere. But if we look beyond the illusion of freedom, we will find out that those options which we can choose is already set by food corporations and its network. Finally, the food that we think we have many choices to choose is all the same, the nutrition-poor foods. According to the author of Appetite for Profit, Michele Simon, said that choosing between cookies from one brand and soft drinks from another brand is not the real freedom. It is just a ‘freedom from choice’, not a ‘freedom of choice’.1 The ultimate goal of capitalism is profit maximizing. To achieve the goal, the corporations have to motivate the consumers to consume more. The more they consume is the more profit the corporations will gain. Another way to achieve the profit maximizing is a cost reduction. How much cost they can reduce means how much they will gain more profit. The economic system we have right now is not favorable for the food corporations to pay attention to public interest or people’s health. It is not possible for the food company to give priority to public interest. It is incompatible with the mainstream economic principles. The food company does not have a duty to promote the health of consumers. Their duty is expanding market share and profit as much as possible for their shareholders. As a result, traditional and local food system was industrialized in order to achieving economies of scale and maximizing productivity. The spread of green revolution in 1940s-1960s2 is the beginning of the industrial food system as it brought a series of technology to be widely used outside of industrialized nations. The traditional agriculture and the local food system became the industrial agriculture and the global food system since then. The characteristics of the industrial agriculture and the global food system are the specialization, hybridized seeds, single crop, synthetic fertilizer and pesticide, mechanization, global food market, long-distance food transport, externality.3 The problems of industrialized food system affect not only in the food security, but also in other dimensions such as environment, society, economy, and politics. For example, mechanization and agricultural technology replace human labor and destroy the local food system. Therefore, many people are pulled out of the rural area to work in the city. And this can cause family and social problems. The agricultural technology which was designed to reduce costs and improved productivity changes characteristic of farming system. The farm must be adjusted specially in order to use machinery more convenient. For example, farmers have to grow a single crop year after year on a large area of land. And they have to cut down the trees, remove the hedgerows and the rocks without regarding to the geography of the land just for the big machinery can work in the field conveniently4 There are also other technologies such as hybridized seeds, synthetic fertilizer and pesticide. All of these technologi
