The Heroism of Malcolm X

When most people think of heroes, they think of Superman and Batman. I think of a more innovative hero such as Malcolm Little - better known as Malcolm X. Malcolm X was intelligent, confident, and fair, all things that I can only hope to be. He faced many endeavors in his life that changed him for the better, particularly spending up to10 years in prison and working with difficult people and circumstances. A major turning point in Malcolm?s life was when he went to prison. Malcolm believed that education was the first step to success, he said, “Without education, you?re not going anywhere in this world.” He realized that his people were oppressed because they weren?t given opportunity to better their education. While he was in prison, he studied the dictionary and improved his vocabulary to better educate himself so that he could lead his people into a better future. During the same time Malcolm met a man named Baines who helped him instill black pride in himself. Soon, he became involved in the civil rights movement, and not long later, black nationalism. He was a dedicated advocate of black independence and the reclaiming of black pride. Malcolm gave many speeches and interviews to give, what he called Afro-Americans, faith, hope and confidence that one day things would change. Following his pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, he came back with a new understanding of integration and that not all whites were evil. Malcolm is a true hero because he lived to establish a fair society. He said, “I?m for the truth, no matter who tells it. I?m for Justice, no matter who it is for or against. I?m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I?m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.” Malcolm?s goal was to ensure that everyone including black and white people were given equal rights, by any means necessary.
