Psychology has always been something I was interested in: how the mind works, and why people do the things they do or treat people the way they do. The human mind is amazing, but throughout my life I have seen how the in one’s brain can be a burden. I have a deep love for people and am very empathetic. Growing up a child of a single mother, I began to be able to read her emotions. I witnessed how it took a toll on her trying to raise us on her own, but not only her, it affected my brother, and lastly myself. I used to try to comfort my family as much as I could and talk to my little brother trying to distract him from our current unfortunate situation. I wanted him to feel relief, because he was too young to feel anything but happiness. That’s how I not only developed a love for psychology but my dream to become a child psychologist. That’s why I believe child psychology is the career that fits me best. Education Most psychology positions require a doctoral degree also known as a Ph.D. There is also the option to get a master’s degree in a specialized area, it just depends on what kind of psychology one wants to pursue. To become a licensed psychology it is required that the student complete residency or some type of internship. Psychologists often gather information and evaluate behavior by setting up laboratory experiments, psychoanalysis, or psychotherapy (Psychologist). They also may often have to conduct personality, performance, and aptitude tests, which are also known as intelligence tests. They use these tests to spot patterns in the patient’s behavior or to reveal the cause-and-effect relationships between events. Psychologist use this information when testing theories in their research or treating patients (Psychologist). Psychologist need to be skilled in knowing the way the mind works and also have exceptional writing skills. Psychologists take extensive notes and often have to diagnose the patient, and they study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people. They are interested in all aspects of interpersonal relationships, including both individual and group influences, and seek ways to improve such interactions. For example, their research helps issues such as workplace diversity and anti-discrimination policies (Careers in Psychology) (7). So it is important to have observational skills, analytical skills and people skills. If someone wanted to pursue a degree in child psychology and become a school psychologist, it would require that one is licensed or certified to do so.
