There are many myths about how ice cream came about, but no one is actually credited for inventing this sweet sensation. Even though there a 101 different stories on how ice cream came about, it is believed that it goes back as far as the second century B.C. The only official information that is known is that Alexander the Great used to enjoy eating snow and ice with a hint of honey and nectar flavor. (“inventors.com”) Biblical references say that King Solomon as loved drinks iced drinks during harvesting. (“pbs.org”) Also, during the Roman Empire times, Nero Claudius Caesar would send servants up to the mountains for snow which was then flavored with juices and fruits. (“pbs.org”) About 1,000 years later Marco Polo brought a recipe over to Italy which now resembles what we would call today as sherbet. It was believed that this recipe soon turned into ice cream in the 16th century and England seemed to have been introduced to ice cream around the same time because it was often used at the table of Charles I. (“idfa.org”) In 1533, France was introduced to ice cream when Catherine de Medici became the wife of Henry II. (“pbs.org”) It wasn’t until 1660 that cream was made for the general public. The first official account of ice cream in New York came from a letter written in 1744 by a guest of the governor of Maryland, William Bladen. (“idfa.org”) But, the first advertisement of ice cream was on May 12, 1777 for an ice cream shop in the New York Gazette. Philip Lenzi, the confectioner, announced to the public that ice cream would be available “almost every day.” (“idfa.org”) Until about 1800, ice cream was mostly eaten by the elite of America. Around 1800, insulated ice houses were invented, not soon after in 1851 Jacob Fussell produced technological innovations which put the ice cream production up in business.
