Football is one of the most popular sports in North America. Many people don’t know about the personal lives of the athletes we respect and root for every time we watch a game. Some football athletes are very abusive to their spouses, yet the National Football League (NFL) does nothing about it. They don’t understand that domestic violence is a serious that needs to be addressed. If the NFL had any sense, they should suspend, or maybe even fire the players. Domestic violence is unacceptable, unreasonable, and should not be tolerated by anyone. Domestic violence is not a sign of showing a person how much they love them. It is a sign of abuse. Nobody should ever be abused because nobody deserves it. Unfortunately, domestic violence is a never-ending problem that occurs too often in today’s society. For example, Chris Brown beat up his ex-girlfriend Rihanna back in 2009. Also, the situation of domestic violence with pro-football player Ray Rice and his wife that occurred a few months ago. We, as a society, look up to these celebrities and pro-athletes as role models, yet judging by their actions, there aren’t really considered “role models” because role models don’t abuse their significant other. The NFL needs to realize that domestic violence is unacceptable in all situations. What I don’t understand about this topic is that what pleasure can one get from hitting their spouse? If these NFL Football athletes believe it’s okay to abuse their spouse, then are they are in for a surprise! When these athletes were growing up, they may have been raised in that manner, assuming domestic abuse is acceptable. The sad thing is, the NFL seem to tolerate this issue. If the NFL want to still players who are abusive, then they will remain abusive. The only way for them to “snap out of it” is for the NFL to kick them off the league, permanently.
