One of the most fascinating incidents in the study of human and psychology is probably Savant Syndrome. Because of the extraordinary abilities founded, we will never certainly understand human memory and cognition until we understand the savant. The term savant, or idiot savant reveals that kind of extraordinary people who, in spite of low intelligence, has a brilliant skill in some specific narrow areas. In this paper, I aim to give a description of Savant Syndrome, as well as explain its cause, and finally describe several famous savants. Description of Savant Syndrome Savant syndrome is a rare and extraordinary condition occurred on people with serious mental disorder or retardation who gained an exceptional skill or talent or a highly specialized area, such as arithmetic or memorization (Darold, 2002). Those people who are diagnosed with Savant Syndrome are called Savants. Dr. J. Langdon Down, who was the first to recognize Savant Syndrome, had originated the word “idiot savant" - meaning low intelligence to address people with extraordinary memory. However, this term is now less used due to its inappropriate connotation. Another term, autistic savant, is more likely to be used although not all savants are autistic (Dave, 2001). As mentioned above, savants often have extraordinary islands of ability or brilliance. So their special skills can be divided into three categories, namely Splinter Skills, Talented Savants and Prodigious Savants. Individual with Splinter Skills possesses specific skills that is in contrast to their disability, Talented Savants displays a high level of ability, and Prodigious Savants involves a much rarer form of the condition (Dave, 2001).
