Webster's dictionary defines courage as "mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty." In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee the theme courage is portrayed throughout the book. “Real courage is when you fight for what is right regardless to whether you win or lose.” In the novel true courage is shown through many characters. During the book Atticus stand up for others, Boos actions reflect his true self, and Scout matures through many specific events. To begin with Atticus is able to accept the obstacles that come his way. He is able to show true bravery by going against Maycomb’s prejudicial views in order to defend Tom. “Courage is when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what” (Lee 112). Atticus is a reliable lawyer who takes Toms case. However, Atticus already knows it is a lost cause yet he still is courageous and takes on the role of defending Tom Robinson a black man, who has been wrongfully accused. Atticus knows he will not win the case. Similar to Ms.Dubose in her battle against her addiction he is “licked” before he begins. It is simply a black man's word against a white man’s.
