The greatest complication in the education system today is the lack of a wider selection of extracurricular activities. Several sources attest to the fact that the most successful students are the ones who are actively involved in the extracurriculars that they are passionate about. By offering more elective offerings such as sports, fine arts, and miscellaneous clubs, the positive effect in schools will emerge that students will perform better in an academic or social environment. Most students usually wake up, go to school, go home and repeat. Erin Massoni, former student at the College of DuPage, eloquently states that “a student’s future can be determined in the things that they do in the hours after school and before their parents get home” (Massoni). Massoni’s statement really portrays how important those hours are to a student’s future. Those hours of running or playing horn can spark a light inside a student that drives him or her to make the life decision to pursue a career in their hobby. On the flip side, the most dangerous time for bad behavior is the time after school and before parents get home, which is usually between three o’clock and seven o’clock. (Massoni). Sources explain that the most common years that students engage in bad behavior is between the ages of twelve and seventeen. The most crucial time for a child to be actively involved in extracurricular activities is between ages nine and seventeen because these are the years that adolescents begin to make their own decisions and control their own behavior. Those years of extracurricular activities are important because the students are in a comfortable environment with guidance and supervision . By being a part of a comfortable and healthy environment, they are better able to resist dangerous behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, gang involvement, and criminal activities (Massoni). Massoni effectively delivers to her audience the message that by having students involved and busy with extra activities, they will be less likely to be engage in bad behavior.
