Naturalistic observations occur on a daily basis within every section of a place we find ourselves occupying, whether it’s at work, a coffee shop, or in my case on this particular day, Barnes and Noble. I chose to observe Barnes and Noble on May 8, 2015 from approximately 1752 until 1830 as well as May 16, 2015 from 1305 until 1500. The facility itself was a brown concrete structure which was overlaid by a brick foundation that overlapped the hard plush concrete wonderfully on all sections of the building. On each sectional including the entrance, there were green rectangular patio style shade screens overlapping the store; there were several green tint glassed windows showing hundreds of books enticing you to enter for a closer glance. Once you entered, there was a weft scent of hazelnut coffee and then a slight smell of something that reminded you of a scent held in a new pair of shoes; I suspect this was the smell of new book pages. There were overwhelming book shelves on all sides of the interiorized beige colored wall structure; the first thing you notice is the café located on the right sectional of the store, filled with eager readers and employees making drinks. To the far left of the store was the checkout section, which 5 cash registers sat on a marble mounted counter top; only two employees were stationed, one male employee at the second register and to the left, a female middle aged woman with brunette hair stood at the fourth register rearranging books on display. In the very back of the facility, a sectional which mostly displayed music and movies cropped off the rear section of the building about 40 feet in length. This observation occurred during my search for new fictional novelties to read; while observing the store and researching books, I discovered several characteristics in the people who occupied the establishment and the establishment’s functionality itself.
