The NCAA, in simplest terms is a very wealthy business. It is a business run by highly paid people called coaches, who coach the unpaid collegiate athletes. As a collegiate athlete, I understand the difficulties of playing a sport and trying to manage time. For example, getting homework done, making sure I have enough study hall hours, and also eating in the café before it closes, makes it difficult to manage these areas of life. The amount of time athletes spends in their sport with practice, weights, and conditioning is incredible and would shock most people. Therefore, collegiate athletes should be paid because of their hard work and dedication that brings the university revenue, they don’t have to continue playing and also, the fact they do not have time for a full-time job. To begin with, collegiate athletes do not continue to play the game they love because they have to; they play because they want to. Whether they get a full-ride scholarship, a partial scholarship, or walk on; it is still not a requirement for them to play at the next level. Most kids go to college just to get an education, student athletes have to balance film sessions, weights, individual shooting workouts, and their education. It’s not easy being a student-athlete. Today, tuition for many schools is so expensive that without scholarships some students would not be able to attend college at all. For these students, college sports offer a great avenue to obtain an education that otherwise would not have been available for them. Scholarships allow athletes the opportunity to further their education, so that they can build a better life for themselves and their families. Next, college athletes would not be in such a big hurry to go pro if they got paid in college. “Fewer than two percent will go pro(NCAA). If college athletes were paid, they would be more apt to staying four years to get a good degree rather than going to the professional league. I am currently a collegiate athlete and the hard work of being an athlete takes a lot out of me mentally and physically. We as student athletes deserve at least enough money to have a normal student life.
