In Canada, one could say that 1969 was year one for homosexual communities. Homosexuality is attraction to a person of the same sex. Homosexuality or gay marriage is a great controversy in today’s age where people have the freedom to do a lot of things. Before the 13th century, priests could marry a spouse of the same-sex without creating a scandal. Same-sex relationships were first criminalized by the Canadian government in the 19th century. And today it is still prohibited in many places. But when people aren’t allowed to marry who they love, a question turns into a debate which turns into a controversy. Many pros and cons are contained in this controversy containing lovers fighting for their love. Although homosexuality is frowned upon by many, it contains many positive points to it. Denying people he option to marry who they love is discriminatory and creates a second class of citizens. Same-sex couples should have access to the same benefits that are enjoyed by heterosexual married couples. A couple wanting to be with someone they want shouldn’t be frowned upon or thought of as any different just depending on what sex the couple is. The concept of “traditional marriage” has changed over time; and the definition of marriage as always being between one man and one woman is historically inaccurate. Gay marriage is also protected by the U.S. Constitution’s commitments to liberty and equality. Marriage is an internationally recognized human right for all people and the gender should not matter. Aside from all these advantages, the idea of homosexuality also contains some negative points. The institution of marriage has traditionally been defined as being between a man and a woman. Marriage is for procreation and should not be extended to same-sex couples because they cannot produce children together.
