"The Catcher in the Rye," by J.D. Salinger, is written for a teenage and young adult audience. I know this statement is true because throughout the book Holden had some things that the wrong audience wouldn’t like. I say that because Holden is a minor, since he is a minor he shouldn’t be making lots of important decisions and he has some bad habits. I am not excluding anyone other than this age but I do believe that the people of that age would have the best reactions toward the book. Since things have changed I am quite sure that older people would have a hard time with this book because it could go against what they were taught in their childhood. I know that this book is for teenage and young adult audience because Holden has very bad language all of the time and he isn’t afraid to swear anytime. This is true because in the first couple pages Holden swears multiple times, for instance “I was the goddam manager of the fencing team” (3). This quote clearly shows that Holden swears frequently and about anything because he is only talking about his old fencing team from Pency. I also know that this supports my claim because of the context, Holden was talking to his teacher and he didn’t even try not to swear. Another piece of evidence that supports my claim is “I got my damn bags at the station” (178). This is another great piece of evidence for my claim because he is talking about getting luggage. I do know that this was the part that Holden had just left Mr. Antolini’s house and Holden was creped out and nervous because off what his teacher did. Even though that had happened I don’t think that is an excuse for Holden to swear about that little thing. I am not sure how things have changes since the ‘50s but I’m pretty sure that swearing wasn’t a polite or common thing coming from a young boy. Throughout this book I kept thinking about a reoccurring theme that Holden had, this bad choices and how he shouldn’t
