Belief is one of the most powerful aspects a human being could possess. It has the capability to unite, to bring peace but also to bring violence and cruelty. However, believing is what many individuals live for and it is a crime to deprive someone from their beliefs. The idea of belief is best illustrated in the book, Night, written by Elie Wiesel. This book is a memoir of the author, known as Eliezel, personal account of suffering during the Holocaust. The memoir suggests that an individual perspective gotten from a certain life experience could lead to unexpected personal beliefs. The narrator faith in God and humanity completely changed ever since he went through the Holocaust horrific events. In the beginning, Eliezel believed deeply in God and was committed to his Jewish religion. He would even take lesson from a Jewish teacher and memorize the Jewish saint book. One day, S.S German officers came to his hometown and imprisoned everyone that was Jewish including Eliezel and that was the moment when Eliezel and the Jewish population world turned upside down. The Jewish were brought up to a place called concentration camp but it’s actually “Death camp” because Jews were treated with such cruelty. During the first night in Birkeau, the Jewish and Eliezel called out for God but his response was silence. That’s when Eliezel started to struggle in keeping his faith in God. Once, couple of Jewish individuals and a Jewish child tried to resist against the Nazis, as a result, they were all hanged. The Nazi made all the Jewish prisoners watch the scenario as a warning. When the child got hung, a Jewish prisoner said “Where is God?” and everyone remained silent because silence was the only answer God provided to them. Eliezel asked himself how God could allow such evilness and cruelty to occur in this world. Even if the temptation was there, Eliezel didn’t stop believing in God but as a result in God lack in goodness he stopped
