21 Pages 634 Words 1557 Views

Mary Shelley'snovel Frankenstein is about a scientist who wanted to create a human by using dead body parts and science to make it come alive. When he succeeded, the monster went on a killing rampage murdering everyone who was close with the creator. Back when this book was written the idea was completely fictional but now we actually have the technology to do something like this with stem cell research and cloning. Stem cell research and cloning is not appropriate for society. It is fantastic that these scientists have made these breakthroughs but there's no need for it. It is playing with god and no one in history has ever had it so why would we need it now. First, stem cell research is an amazing advancement in life today but it can be used for good and bad. People can create viruses and animals by using stem cells but it has not yet been perfected. However The Company Amyris Biotechnologies successfully used synthetic dna to make a medicine for malaria as shown in the article “Advances or Horror: The first lab-created Organism” This is one thing that was a success but people still had doubts as shown in the article “Within minutes of the announcement, the environmental group Friends of the Earth shot off warnings and calls for a moratorium on research in synthetic biology” They said it just like in Australia when they made beetles and rabbits and they went nuts. Everything that has to do with stem cells is almost too good to be true, people think they can make it work but it's just not how life is supposed to work. The rabbits and beetles going crazy is just like frankenstein because the monster that was made went crazy and killed people and this shows that stem cell research should not be a part of our society. Second, Cloning is also a huge step for scientists in modern day life but it is not necessary for us to use. Cloning is far from being perfected and can not yet be used to clone a human to what they were the first
