Medgar Evers was one of the greatest leaders of the civil rights moments from the 1950’s and 1960’s next to Martin Luther king Jr. born and raised in the small town of Decatur, Mississippi. Medgar’s had very strong religious beliefs as a child. Medgar dropped out of high school to go into the army and fight in WW2, After Evers received honorary discharge from the army he got his diploma and attended college at Alcorn College in Mississippi. Medgar’s first job out of college was selling insurance for Magnolia Insurance, this was just one of the few black businesses’ in the 50’s. Medgar’s boss was a member of the NAACP and recruited Medgar into the association (national association for the advancement of colored people) after he applied at the school of law in Mississippi and got denied, Medgar’s boss saw that as confidence and asked Medgar is he would join the NAACP. Medgar and his family moved to Jackson, Mississippi so he could work full time with the NAACP, while in Jackson Medgar became field secretary of the Mississippi branch of the NAACP. Within 3 years of Medgar being in the states position Evers nearly doubled the amount of memberships in the NAACP to an outstanding 15,000 members. One of Medgar’s Evers first assignments was the murder of a 14 year olds boy, Emmett Till. Evers and two other field workers, Ruby Hurley and Amzie Moore heard about this horrific event they took the investigation into their own hands and tracked down a few potential witnesses and witnesses leading up to the abduction and murder. Evers, Ruby and Amzie convinced several people to come forward and testify agents the two white men accused of murdering Emmett Till. With an all-white jury who took just an hour to decide the verdict came back “Not guilty” to both men. After this horrible event Medgar’s and the NAACP did not stop at attempting to make peace.
