Toxin Emessions in Alberta, Canada

21 Pages 815 Words 1557 Views

In Alberta, the production of coal is one of the provinces main infrastructures for providing for almost all of the electrical energy needs, as we have an abundant amount at an inexpensive cost to mine. Alberta produces approximately 90% of our power through the combustion of thermal coal energy. The coal used in Alberta has a relatively high sulfur content which in turn gets burned along with the coal in power generating plants. This process causes the sulfur to combust creating exhaust that is released into the atmosphere. For Acid rain to be created sulfur dioxide reacts with water which forms a product of sulfurous acid. Sulfurous acid can be shown using the equation H2O(l)+SO2(g), H2SO3(aq). Carbonic acid is another acid found when Carbon dioxide gas reacts with water. This acid can be shown using the equation CO2(g) +H2O(l) ? H2CO3(aq). When these acids are formed they fall with the precipitation causing acid rain to be made. Certain parties may argue the beneficial side to Alberta using coal to supply almost all of our energy needs while others would disagree and argue that another way should be more of an option for our expanding province in the future. To some people they have a different perspective on thermal coal being burned and used for supplementing Alberta’s energy needs. The point of view of changing for one reason is because of the environmental impact that coal has on our atmosphere and earth. The process of burning coal causes certain gases and smoke to be emitted into the atmosphere. When all these toxins are released it comes back onto the ground of earth through falling rain which is known as acid rain after these chemicals are emitted into the falling precipitation. Acid rain can have very serious effects on the land and environment. A noticeable problem not only on our plant and animal life is also our environment that we live and breathe in as the human species. The exhaust being emitted from these factor
