"Private Peaceful" is a classic fictional novel by Michael Morpurgo, dedicated to young adults. The book was published in 2003 and ever since it got released more and more young adults started to read it. The extract is about Tommo realizing his head is wounded and he was buried alive. Tommo struggles to get free and fears to die. Later on he heard Charlie’s sweet, soft voice, trying to get Tommo out into the blessed daylight and sunlight. If it weren’t for Charlie, Tommo would have kept on choking on the earth and would have suffocated to death, which would have lead to a sad and miserable death. However if Charlie didn’t save Tommo, Tommo would have died and he wouldn’t have caused a whole lot of trouble. Morpurgo makes this a memorable moment in the novel because he uses a variety of descriptive techniques and emotive languages to let the reader picture what’s going on. For example “I wake to the muffled sound of machine-gun fire” has words to help the reader think and imagine all the destruction going on around Tommo, “All I can see is darkness” this has words to help the reader imagine what Tommo sees. Morpurgo has a lot of thought put into it and it really brings out the feeling. I could really feel how Tommo felt and saw when he was buried alive by the way Morpurgo uses the adjectives and the descriptive languages. I think that it brings all my senses together and it makes me feel relaxed and curious to continue reading. Reading the extract over and over, finally finding good evidence made me think about what happens if I was in that situation. The evidence I found were quite interesting, I think that the words and the way he uses it really create a memorable moment. Morpurgo liked using the word “panic” and “buried” a lot in this extract. I like how he used ways to describe Tommo’s surrounding like, “blackness begins to crumble and fall in on me” and “somewhere in no-man’s-land, looking up
