More than 10,000 primary schools had fewer than half their pupils competing against other schools, this must be acknowledged in some way. In order to come to a conclusion about the positive or negative experiences children have with competitive sports, we must take a number of factors into account. Firstly, children will gain a positive experience through team building in competitive sports. At some point in a child’s life they will have to have good communication skills with others to be able to complete a task. Competitive sport gives these children their first insight to what life skills they will need in the near future. It has been scientifically proven that children, who participate in group activities that involve competitiveness, have a better understanding of team work. Those who participated in sport when they were younger say this it sets them up for their life ahead as many compete for jobs, places at university and for survival in our capitalistic society that thrives on competition. Nonetheless, we should prioritise teaching our children to be individuals before team players. We tell our children that everybody is different, yet we push them to be part of a team they do not want to be involved in? It is significantly important for those who experience negativity through competitive sports to find their own feet, rather than relying on the help of others. We should be accepting with our child’s personality, interests and decision of not competing in sports as it is their choice. They may have different strengths and capabilities that others do not have but we should not be insistent for them to be something that they are not, as at some point they will not be able to be carried by others for the rest of their life, therefore individuality is far more important than team players at such a young age.
