The topic of fatherhood and parenting is an important theme throughout readings and many media outlets. The TV show “Last Man Standing” expresses the roles of men as fathers and shows multiple normative ways of being a father figure. The readings “The Perceptions and Experiences of Russians Immigrant and Sudanese Refugee Men as Fathers in an Urban Centre in Canada” and “A Cross-Cultural Perspective on Parenting” both address the meaning of fatherhood and the expectations of parenting. These sources connect to the overall theme of human development and socialization in relation with children and their growth through different cultures. The show used in this paper, “Last Man Standing”, involves a family living in the United States that contains three teenage girls and their parents. The oldest daughter, Kristin, has her own son, Boyd, with her fiancé; their relationship expresses the theme of co-parenting. The other daughters, Mandy and Eve, have very opposite possibilities, hobbies and behaviour. Mandy is the “girly-girly” who designs women clothing and goes out with older males every night. Eve is the “tomboy” who plays on boy’s soccer and football teams and she plans to join the army. Mike Baxter, the father, is the director of marketing for the “Outdoor Man” chain of sporting goods stores. Mike is married to Vanessa, who is a geologist, she is shown at home majority of the show, cooking, cleaning or taking care of her children and grandson. “Last Man Standing” has many examples of human development but the themes of fatherhood and parenting will be focused on in this paper. The topic of fatherhood is shown by Mike Baxter and Ryan Vogelson, Boyd’s father, throughout the show. The men face challenges such as decision-making with their spouse, spending enough time with their children and providing for their family. Throughout the show, Mike he seems to have to agree with Vanessa’s opinions and decisions when it comes to their children to ensure she continues to be happy. For example, in episode 1 of season 4, Eve has the chance to join the boy’s football team at her school but the only thing stopping her is Vanessa’s fear of her getting hurt.
