Nice Work, the novel written by the British author David Lodge, portrays the clash of cultures between the main characters of the story, Robyn Penrose and Victor Wilcox. Such clash can be clearly appreciated in different aspects of their lives: personality, work and social status. The aim of this essay is to compare and analyze these aspects in Robyn’s and Vic’s realities. In the first place, Robyn Penrose and Vic Wilcox have very different personalities as it is shown in the whole story. Robyn is a conservative thirty four-year-old woman. She is a tall and slender person with a womanly shaped figure. However, she prefers wearing dark and loose clothes, so that nobody can see her body as an object of sexual attraction. Furthermore, Robyn is a self- confident, optimistic and persistent woman who thinks she is good at what she is doing and she prefers having her career to raising her own family. As an illustration, she teaches literature passionately and she is hoping to get employed at university, as she is a temporary lecturer in English. However, she is not interested in earning much money. On the other hand, Vic’s personality is quite different from Robyn’s. He is an ambitious and money-minded man. Due to his capitalist doctrines, money is very important to him. Vic is a stereotypical businessman; he and his family live in a beautiful house, he wears expensive clothes, and he has a huge office room with expensive furniture in it. In addition, his character shows a very aggressive manner. A key example of this is when he ensures that a security man loses his job because he was watching TV instead of doing his job. Vic is also a strict and sensible man, and he has his own opinion, which is shown, for instance, when he has a discussion with his wife, Marjorie, about their daughter’s future studies. All these examples show how Vic and Robyn are so different in personality and this obviously affects every aspect of their lives.
