Completing my first year at the University of California, San Diego, I have come to realize that I am not “College Ready, College Bound.” Camino Nuevo High School is not preparing students for the college experience. Talking with the class of 2014, I have realized that students entering college are lacking the skills necessary to be successful. Skills such as studying, test taking abilities, and knowing the difference between a quarter and semester system are not being properly taught to the students. The primary purpose of high school is to get scholars into college. The courses taught in CNHS are too lenient in their grading policies, Advance Placement courses, and offer students much leeway. In the year that I was in CNHS, I have notice that teachers are very flexible with the grading and retake policies. Students who got a bad grade in the quarter benchmark or any other assignments were able to fix our grades by doing other assignments. Most of the students were able to raise their grades from a C to an A or even an F to an A right before the grades where due. In college, we don’t have that opportunity to retake an exam or an assignment. Whichever grade we got would be our final grade with no exception. If CNHS had been stricter of the retake policies, we wouldn’t be having students in academic probation because they failed an exam and cannot retake. It would have encouraged students to work twice as hard for the benchmarks and assignments that they took in high school. When I had my first midterm, I had no idea how to study or even what to study. CNHS enable us by giving us study guides of the materials that we would be tested on. Sometimes that study guides that were provided by the teachers had the exact answer of the benchmark that all we had to due was to memorize the study guides. In college, we have to create our own study guides; if we were lucky enough the professors would provide us with pervious exam as a study guides. The problem that I faced as a first year was that I did not know how to study or what to study for the class. In all of my discussion class we created Google docs to help each other by posting up lecture notes. If CNHS need to be able to let students create their own s
