Sports have had a major impact on American society throughout the years. From all-American baseball to sports such as swimming, polo, and even bowling each sport caters to the diverse and multitude cultures of America. There are also sports such as, taekwondo, which is a sport for people of all ages and can serve as a professional sport or self defense to those that need it. There are several pros and cons in taekwondo. However, three of the main pros in taekwondo are self defense, discipline, and fitness. Self defense is taught to those who need it, such as blocking, kicking, and forms are taught to them. They can use these techniques in case of any emergency involving for them to defend themselves against their opponent or someone who is trying to hurt them. When Katina was in taekwondo her master taught her self-defense to protect herself from her opponents. There were many kicks and blocks taught to her to be used during her competition fights. Discipline is also a very important aspect of taekwondo and is taught diligently to all students. The master shows them personal self control, how to prioritize what’s important in life such as their education, and how to follow rules not only during practice but also at home and school. Discipline was also taught to Katina. If she were to come home with a low grade her mother would tell her master and right away he would punish her by staying after practice and doing extra squats. He taught her that school comes first and that she should always respect everyone. Fitness is a crucial component of this sport. It is inevitable not to burn off so many calories due to the intensity of each practice session. Even though a practice may last only sixty minutes students get a complete body workout that not only burns calories but generates muscle throughout the entire body.
