In order to succeed as the new product development project leader, there are skills that must be utilized consistently. The ability to effectively communicate ideas and explain desired results will prove beneficial when desired results are accomplished. Keeping an open mind and listening to input from subordinate teammates can produce possible improved methods or even cost-effective methods in manufacturing. Good leaders seek feedback from subordinates as to the perception of the leader’s ability to guide the subordinates. A willingness to take chances and try new methods may or may not produce the best results, but will help develop an improved leadership style. A journal record of both terrific and poor leadership choices used can help guide future choices by showing how those choices worked in previous situations. Goal planning helps minimize difficulties and conflict that may arise along the way (Curphy, Ginnett, Hughes, 2008). Good superior-follower relationships can be very beneficial in working situations. Superiors are more likely to listen to input from a follower that makes an effort to share the same attitudes, values, and approaches when possible. A subordinate should desire to do his part to make his superior be successful and a superior should want his or her followers to be successful as well. This is a team concept where the groups are interdependent of each others' performance. To accomplish this, good communication in both directions is an absolute must. A team member should keep the supervisor informed about pertinent information concerning the organization's operations and anything that could hinder those operations.
