Basketball is a popular, worldwide sport played by 2 teams of 5 players in each team on a rectangular court. The point of the game is to travel around the court and score as many baskets on a hoop as possible. The hoop usually measure around 18 inches in diameter. Players dribble the ball with one hand to score against their opponent. The team with the most points wins at the end of the game. The history of basketball rates back to a cold December in the year of 1891 where a Physical Education teacher thought of a way to keep his students active when it was raining outside. This teacher was called James Naismith and he made a 10 foot court in where the kids would shoot the ball but not shoot it up as we modern people do today. The courts were average size and instead of shooting up, the students would shoot straight. Students were to play in peach baskets and not metal hoops and backboards of today. Basketball wasn’t played with that big brown sphere with a lot of grip we use today but with a soccer ball. Tony Hinkle was the first to come up with the basket ball in the 1950s when he realized that it had to be a dark ball in order for the audience to see it perfectly fine. As I mentioned before, the point of the game is to score as many baskets on the opponent and prevent them from scoring on you. This is called a shot. Each shot is worth 2 point if and only if it is scored inside the 3 point arc. From the 3 point arc, which measures around 6.75 m, and beyond, the shot is worth 3 points IF scored. You can also score a 1 pointer if you were fouled and you scored from the penalty spot. This in Basketball is called a free throw because no one is there to block you and it’s a free shot. Games are played in 4 quarters with 12 minutes in each quarter. Only 5 players could be in the court at once from each team. Substitutions are made when the game is stopped but are limited.
