From the beginning of time, mankind has searched for efficiency in farming and living. Before genetic engineering, farmers created hybrids of domesticated crops. In the 1900’s scientists began to use Mendel’s theory of Classic Selection, crossing plants with desired characteristics. In 1953 scientists began to manipulate DNA, leading to the discovery of “splicing” DNA and placing another gene into it. In 1980 it was legalized that genetically altered life forms may be patented. 1986 genetically engineered Tobacco plants. Now the pesticides and/or herbicides used on our food. These modifications were made with the intention of positive effect, However further studies state negative repercussions. People should rally together against GMOs because they are the cause of superweeds, can lead to health problems, and are a major allergy risk. One of the direct effects of using GMOs, such as pesticides, is the genetic evolution of superweeds. These wild plants have become superweeds rather than their former selves, regular weeds, by adapting an immunity to the GM pesticide/herbicides that have been designed. Because no farmer wants weeds ruining their crops the people decided to create stronger more potent chemicals in attempt to be rid of their new-and-improved pests. However this only had the opposite effect, which was making the weeds more resistant and accidently heavily contaminate the crops on their own. This contamination would have a secondhand effect on all consumers of these plants. Effect on all consumers means not only humans, but also insects and certain birds. Some insects have, like the weeds, managed to pry their way up the evolutionary chain and become superbugs which are also immune to the toxins being used in attempt to exterminate them. These insects are not only a danger to the crops, but to agriculture as a whole. Without the ability to rid themselves of these pests farmers crops are in more danger than they already were with the potential threat of overpopulation their natural enemies. However not all insects are so fortunate as to be able to resist the toxi
