Prejudice impacts everyone mostly in a negative way. Our society uses prejudice and stereotype daily without realizing. It becomes an issue, people don’t realize that in order to change we have to start with ourselves and set by example. Stigma impacts our self-identity, which becomes an issue when it comes to changing the minds of American’s about prejudice. According to Blaine (2013), “social stigma refers to the experience of being socially discredited or flawed by a personal trait or characteristic.” The fact that people have experience the affect of prejudice happening or even being the target of it becomes difficult to change and the mine of other because of their direct experiences. Stigma can lead to stereotype threats because it “refers to the doubts that arise in one’s mind about one’s own competence and worthiness when faced with others’ negative beliefs about one’s character and ability” (Blaine: pg197). Stigma impacts our self-identity by not allowing use to be the best that we can be. Stigmas against black student in school are that we are lazy and low intelligence (Blaine: pg197). The fact, that the black students already have this stigma. When they start to fail a subject in school they can depend on the stigma to explain the cause of the failing it becomes a mind trick in your head and you play the role of how society thinks a black student should be instead of trying to figure out why the fail the black student start to prove the stigma correct and would say well black people are low intelligence so they make themselves believe the stigma wouldn’t get the subject even if I got extra help. The techniques used for reducing prejudice that I find that most people can learn to use and will actually reduce prejudice are cross-categorization and empathy.
