As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” Throughout the city, state, nation, and world there are many unjust laws that violate a person’s rights. One of the major policies that exists is the one that does not allow all gay people to be legally married to their partners. This should be protested because the U.S. Constitution grants all Americans the right of “the pursuit of happiness.” If they are not allowed to be with the person they love, then their basic right is non-existent. They no longer have the right to be happy just because the person they love is the same sex. Gender should not be a factor of love, it should not have to matter who a person is with if they are happy with them. Life is about experiences and finding what makes someone feel great. By protesting this policy, equal, basic rights would be given to everyone. LGBT people can live peacefully with the one they love and get married. It can also give everyone a sense that there is absolutely nothing wrong with same sex marriage. By denying gays their rights, they only hurt them and take their happiness. Passive resistance against this policy is the way to go because the message can be conveyed peacefully. Using force and violence would only make matters worse. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.” If this policy is attempted to be resisted with no peace, a compromise will never be reached. It can be resisted by organizing marches where people walk together in union to support gay rights. Everyone around the state can refuse to marry until marriage is equal to everyone. This would be a method of boycotting. It can be thought as, “If gay people can not get married, then why should I?” It is all about peace. Flyers can also be made to spread the word about the unjustness of the policy. In this act, I would be part of an organization. I am not the only person
