Radio Broadcast - War of the Worlds

On Monday, October 30th, 1938 at 8 p.m., many Americans turned into, “The Mercury Theatre on Air,” radio program which was featuring a play by Orsen Welles called “The War of the Worlds”. It was an adaptation of the book by Howard Koch which was about an Earth invasion by the Martian alien race. But there had been a very important change, that resulted in the confusion and frenzy of many Americans instead of reading just like a play it was performed like a news broadcast. The broadcast was intended to make everything more dramatic and compelling. As the play began, it sounded like a normal music station, but then there was an interruption the news announcer confirmed that in Grover Mills, NJ there was an explosion. The listeners were at the edge of their seats listening to the various actors describing the Martian landing, invasion and what was soon to be the destruction to our country. Throughout the broadcast it was announced that this was no real and all just a play, but this was done in 40 min intervals so if you missed one you would not know that it was all staged until the next time one was done. The actors were compelling playing their parts with veracity that many believed them to be actual officials such as the Government Weather Bureau and announcers. During a description of the aliens coming out of the spacecraft the “newscaster” stated "Now it's another one, and another. They look like tentacles to me. There, I can see the thing's body. It's large as a bear and it glistens like wet leather. But that face. It...it's indescribable. I can hardly force myself to keep looking at it. The eyes are black and gleam like a serpent. The mouth is V-shaped with saliva dripping from its rimless lips that seem to quiver and pulsate....The thing is raising up. The crowd falls back. They've seen enough.
