Sadly, in today’s society, physical appearance is extremely emphasized. When developing an opinion of someone, their appearance should be among the last things considered. Yet, judging someone based on their physical allure is unavoidable; the idea that "looks are a factor" is built into us on an integral level. One of the main reasons why society emphasizes on physical appearance is due to celebrities and their lifestyles. Furthermore many people have the need to feel accepted by others and that’s a big contributor to the emphasis we place on physical appearance. In society everyone depends on looks. They discriminate a lot of people by the way they dress or the way they even talk. If you’re wearing a lot of make-up and wearing mini skirts and a spaghetti shirt the people that see you are going to think that you’re something that you’re not. If you have tattoos or not properly dressed and go to a bank to find work they will not hire you because of the way you dress and the way you look. Employers look for a person that can rather attract customers than drive them away. Character and skills are key in life, but according to our society someone who looks a certain way, for example someone with tattoos and baggy clothing, is already perceived as a gang banger or thug. That is the sad reality that our society has come to. The need to feel accepted by others has become another main reason why our society has and is emphasizing so much on physical appearance. We crave acceptance. To be accepted makes us feel like we belong- we feel normal. When we don’t feel accepted, we quickly modify ourselves in order to feel accepted.In this moment, we sacrifice the greatest part of ourselves, our uniqueness and our abilities. In schools we adopt behaviors that are not ours to connect with the “in” crowd, and all just to feel like we belong.
