Each living being has a role, a purpose to achieve and perform in their lives. In the course of life, individuals would come to know many people, thus as “social creatures” humans have an innate sense of responsibility to be accountable for all their actions towards the community, including our environment. All the area around them, their home, their estate, their city, their country and the whole world is ultimately their responsibility. The environment is basically the world around them that affects them, directly or indirectly which includes the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and each other. Hence, besides multi-national corporations and the government, ordinary citizens are also responsible for any of their country's environmental problems even if it's to a small extent. The throw-away culture is evident in the modern consumerist behavior citizens in developed nations are displaying. Advertisements, which often portray what may not be absolutely necessary to one's life has encouraged a culture where consumers often purchase goods that they have no inherent need for and throw away goods that they view as outdated, even though they still serve their function well. This can be seen from long queues to purchase the iPhone 4 are owners of the iPhone 3 who desire the latest product even though their previous phones still function perfectly. The production of such electronic goods require much of the Earth's resources. In fact, every manufacturing process requires fuel that is derived from fossil fuels in order to maximise profits for the manufacturer. Manufacturing processes are responsible for the emission of large amounts of polluting gases into the environment, worsening the problems of pollution and global warming, which have far-reaching impacts on the eco-system. Hence, with much of modern consumerism, where people's demand for goods are every increasing due to changing taste and preferences, the polluting activities of these manufacturing plants will indubitably rise, worsening environmental problems which are directly caused by ordinary citizens of these nations. Hence being responsible for the environmental problems, the citizens should commit to the calls for environmental conservation and do their part in protecting the environment. Despite that, detractors may argue that the need for the citizens of a country to conserve our environment is exaggerated
