The old adage “Why did the chicken cross the road” is very often followed by a silly or stupid joke or pun. My new question though is why wouldn’t the chicken cross the road? There are many reasons why it shouldn’t but one big reason why I don’t think they (the chickens) should be that worried, and that is texting and driving or distracted driving in general. With so much new technology now a days and having to be connected to everyone and everything all the time while trying to do more things in the same amount of time has increased the problem of multitasking while driving. How does this have anything to do with a chicken? Well, the punch line of my joke is that since you have probably already been in an accident due to the increased probability of having an accident while driving distracted. Maybe this should be an anti-joke, but this is no laughing matter. To help get my point across on why I think driving distracted is a more serious problem than people think I have brought in a few outside sources to prove my point. The first source is a video by PBS (Texting and Driving, 2009) in which Professor David Strayer from the University of Utah talks about how its not only texting that distracts us. Professor Strayer gives some eye-opening facts including that talking on the phone increases the likelihood of an accident by four times that of a normal driver. If that’s not enough to change your mind, then maybe this is; texting while driving increases the likelihood of an accident by twice that of talking on a phone. That means texting while driving increases the likelihood of an accident to eight times more that of a normal driver. These facts coupled with the fact that 50 percent of teens say they text while they drive has caused me to keep my eyes up and mind alert more so than ever to help me defend against the chance of an accident.
