The helmet to helmet rule is not necessary because football is a contact sport by nature. Tackling, blocking, sacking of the quarterback, catching, and defending yourself are all part of the game. As a little leaguer you are introduced to this sport and its basics. By the time you get to college and are lucky enough to play at that level, you are well aware of the rules and the consequences of playing the sport of football. You have a passion for it, a need to play, and at times, being a football player can define you. Experience has taught me that and I have played both sides of the line of scrimmage for seven years. Passion for the sport is something I can relate to. On March 30, 2013, the Helmet to Helmet rule was passed and implemented. It states that any player who delivers illegal blows to the head and neck will face large fines and suspensions. The National Football League has been focusing on this issue for over a decade. The 2012 season had some huge hits that caused injuries the league could not ignore. Pressure mounted on them to put something in place to make the game safer for players, hence the Helmet to Helmet rule. Some may argue this is a self-sustaining tactic by the NFL due to pressure from the medical community and pending law suits brought on by former players; I actually agree. Is the rule “a matter of compassion “or “more an issue of self-preservation” (1) inthesetimes. The NFL is under extreme pressure on both sides of this issue. Their decision will affect parent’s decisions about whether or not to put their young son’s into the sport of football. It will also affect those who are currently participating in the sport and are instinctively passionate about going to the next level. This is a hard place to be for the NFL representatives.
