Our society is constructed of people of different social classes. People of lower, middle and upper class have their distinct customs and culture. Culture is something that they are born and brought up with and very difficult to change or develop. The behavior people exhibit in their day-to-day lives represents their class. The movie “Small Time Crooks” has completely captured all kinds of stereotypes related to the working class and upper class people in the society. By shedding light on the stereotypes and portraying the behavioral differences of upper and lower class this movie has proved the point that one cannot buy class and taste with wealth, one has to born into class in order to act classy. Thus a cultural development for the lower class people is almost impossible. It opens up with ex-con Ray Winkler who works as a mere dishwasher and has dreams to live lavishly with tons of money on the beaches of Florida. He tries to pursue his wife Frenchy Winkler who works as a manicurist to give up their saving so that he can invest it in his plan to rob a bank. Frenchy is skeptical and unconvinced as he explains his scheme to rent a store and tunnel into the bank vault next door. As the first step of their heist they open up a cookie store next to the bank. With multiple disastrous attempts their plan to rob the bank fails miserably. But the cookie shop takes off and they appoint Frenchy’s cousin May as a helping hand. May eventually blabs out the plans for the robbery to a cop and then the cop catches Ray and his partners red-handed. This incident leads to a franchise operation, and within a year Ray and Frenchy and their associates become rich beyond their wildest dreams. As millionaires and nouveau riche Ray and Frenchy buy an extravagant apartment and decorate it with miscellaneous objects of bizarre decorative pieces with “the Harp” being the most ridiculous one that Frenchy puts in her living room which represents poor taste. Frenchy decides to host a housewarming dinner party where she invites all the socialites, rich and famous people.
