Two of the greatest running backs to ever be in the NFL were Walter Payton of the Chicago Bears and Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions. Both men are said to be the reason their teams were so lethal, but they are definitely not the same kind of player. Both players had their own style that made them successful. These men both were physically identical yet different, worked in ways to make their teams better and made records that would stand for years. To start off, both of these players were 5’10” tall. They also both weighed 200 pounds each. Their size and weight made them slim and fast runners. However, both men were extremely strong and fierce. These men both were both a spectacle to watch play. You would have Walter bouncing off and breaking tackles while Barry was juking and slipping by defenders. Both men were fast, but they used their speed differently. Walter was a wrecking ball. Whoever got in his way felt all the kinetic energy he charged up as he plowed on. Barry would use his speed and a quick step left or right to slide on by each defender. Now, both men could run over a tackler or juke past someone but they were known best for their own dominant style. This is what set them apart the most. There are other aspects that set them apart other than how they ran. Walter Payton always worked to help his team in every aspect of the game. Barry was a force to be reckoned with in the running game, but he did not possess the skills Walter had when it came to blocking, receiving, and even passing the ball. Walter was the main reason, as far as offense is concerned, the Bears reached and won the Super Bowl in 1985. He was a one man offense. Barry did help his team, but his part in assisting wasn’t a big impact like Walter’s. What Barry is known for is primarily his own personal stats running.
