If art is a reflection of the society then the poem “What do Women Want” by Kim Addonizio is a perfect point of reference. Women are often stereotyped and downplayed in the society, yet the literary world offers little knowledge on the negative outcomes that comes out of these situations. However, in this poem, the audience can have a glimpse of the consequence that accompany women’s stereotypes. By employing appropriate use of imagery and metaphors, Addonizio explores a woman’s personality and unravels how she desires to be understood. Although sometime she assumes a harsh style to put out her message, the author also uses honest in her writing, which enables her to rewrite false impressions and place them in their appropriate setting. What comes of this literary piece is nothing but women desires in an ever unyielding environment. While it may be arguable, this poem promotes the idea that women desire attraction, attention and care. This poem uses symbols and imagery to highlight women’s desire for attraction. This is illustrated in the poem when Addonizio indicates that “I want it too tight, I want to wear it / until someone tears it off me / I want it sleeveless and backless” (3-4).
