The humpback whale is a large yet beautiful creature of the deep. It’s kingdom is Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, class: mammalia, Order; Cetacea, Family; Balaenopteridae, Genus; Megaptera, Species; Novaeangliae. The evolution of the whales is controversial due to it being hard to find a fossil. Scientist think that the earliest forms of Cetacean were originated in the Eocene era (about fifty million years ago). The suborder archaeoceti could be found in tropical vegetation in and around swamp lands and advancing seas (Evans 1987). According to Evans the archaeoceti were aquatic elongated species and reduced hind limbs. They were well adapted to life along the coast and the open sea. As the Cetacean order moved into the ocean, they began to develop certain traits to help them to survive. The Balaenopteridae, which the humpback is a member of, can be found as early as Micene (five to fifty- millions year ago). There was an ancient rorqual from this time period called Megaptera miocene, which is similar to today's humpback whales, showing that humpbacks probably evolved and appeared around the late Miocene era early Pliocene, and have existed ever since. The humpback whale has been hunted since its creation, making it endangered. In the eighteen hundreds the value of those whales increased making them a perfect target for hunters. With advancing weaponry by the nineteen hundred the whale population saw a huge decline of whales, then in the twentieth century the population went as low as seven-hundred in north America by nineteen sixty-six worldwide only approximately five-thousand whales, making them endangered. The humpback whale has to eat 1 ton of food each day. Though the whales are very large they eat small organisms. Depending where the whale lives will affect it diet; in the northern hemisphere whales almost completely feed on krill. When the whales they use a technique called called lunge feeding. Lunge feeding is when the whale ope
