Introduction Sydney is the biggest city in Australia with only one airport. Tourism and international education are one of its pillar industries, but with the development of economy, especially tourism, it is difficult to deal with the increasing number of potential passengers. The government is therefore considering a proposal to build another airport in western Sydney. Rationale The government hopes that if Badgerys Creek airport completed, it will meet the increasing demand for aviation services and stimulate the economy. The Joint Study (2012) found that, at present, the demand of passenger journeys in Sydney will double to 87 million in the next 2 decades and double again to 165 million by 2060. It also points out that there will be 54 million of potential passenger journeys will be affected due to the inability of Kingsford Smith Airport to satisfy the demand. According to Jones (2014), the new airport could accelerate the economic development around western Sydney. A report by the Department of Infrastructure and regional development also found that NSW will lose $17.5 in gross state product and $34 million in gross domestic product by 2060 if the proposal was rejected. Objections The main criticism of this proposal is on social and environmental grounds. There will be hundreds of residents need to move out of current homes in order to build the new airport (Bali, 2014). Jelfs (2014) points out that the noise from the airport will influence the general public and also Badgerys Creek has “horrendous” fog. Moreover, there will be environmental concerns, such as, air quality, noise pollution and negative impacts on water supply, which surrenders Badgerys Creek an inappropriate site for the new airport (Martinkovits, 2013).
