In this day and age, gay marriage has been the talk of the country. You hear it on the news, read it in the newspaper, and also hear people talk about it. People have become more accepting of it, but there are others that shun the thought of it. Being the daughter of two women, this is a constant topic in my life. There have been ups and downs to being so close to this subject. Everybody that I and my mothers have met has been supportive and accepting of our non-traditional family. But where there is good, there is also bad. I have been bullied in the past by a former classmate, just because I have two mothers. Not only do I have gay parents, I also have several friends that are gay as well. A childhood friend of mine and his boyfriend were victims of a hate crime. When I found out what happened, I cried. I was so surprised that some people hate homosexuality so much, that they would be willing to beat someone just because of a difference in sexual orientation. It upset me to know that people think like that. It was a hard concept for me to grasp since I had never really been around that type of behavior before. Now that I am older, I realize that everyone is entitled to their opinion, and some believe in it so much that they would resort to physical violence; with them doing that, it really shows their true character. Another buzz surrounding gay marriage is the aspect of religion and how the law revolves around it. The Declaration of Independence ensures the separation of church and state and yet, the marriage laws do not reflect this. Because of these laws, my biological mother who is a disabled veteran is not able to legally marry my other mother, and therefore cannot receive spousal benefits. When it comes down to religion and law, they both say that marriage should be between a man and a woman, but why would this exist when the most important document in our government states to not even mix these two different entities.
